How to Plan a Cocktail Hour Your Guests Will Love

Having a cocktail hour that your guests will enjoy is really pretty simple. A few appetizers, some drinks and a little music will do the trick to give you guests a place to hang out and set the tone for the rest of the night. Here are a few of my favorite tips to make it memorable and give it a personal touch.

  1. Set the mood with light music. Whether you have live music or not, use this time as a chance to play some music that the couple loves. Cocktail hour music should be quieter and more laid back than the reception dance music because it serves to completely different purposes. Cocktail hour music should be background music to give your guests the opportunity to mingle, while reception music gets them up and dancing. Hiring a jazz trio or an acoustic artist is a fun alternative to your boring classical music.
  2. Have fun with some signature drinks. I think it’s fun when the bride and groom have a favorite drink and give it a name. Guests love those kinds of personal touches!
  3. Don’t forget the non-alcoholic drinks. Don’t be the people that only offer water to their non-drinking guests. Have a fun sparkling drink available so that they feel like they are partaking in the fun.
  4. Keep the food light and utensil-free. Have fun with the hors d’oeuvres and incorporate things you love but didn’t get to include in the formal reception menu.
  5. Provide seating and tables. Some of your guests may need to sit, so having a few tables with chairs is thoughtful. Tall tables are great for those that are mingling and standing. It gives them a place to lean and set their drinks on.
  6. Keep it simple. Don’t worry about spending money here on decorations or elaborate entertainment. Guests just want to have something to snack on, have a couple of beverages and talk with friends and family.
